Obituary

Celebration of Life Services for Mr. Sam Wright will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 11AM at Second Baptist Church, 800 N. Decatur Street, Dublin, Georgia, with Reverend Korie Baker officiating. Interment will follow at Northview Cemetery in Dublin, Georgia.

Sam Wright, affectionately known as “Rat,” was born on December 21, 1938, in Wrightsville, Georgia, to the late Leroy and Julia Wright. He later made his home in Dublin, Georgia, where he built a life defined by hard work, family, and a remarkable talent for working with his hands.

Sam was a hardworking man of many trades who could do just about anything. Construction was more than a job to him; it was his lifelong passion. He began his career in the late 1960s in Dublin, Georgia, working with H. L. Palmer. Over the years, he worked alongside various builders, developing his craft and earning a reputation as a man who took pride in his work. He spent the final years of his construction career with H.A. Sack Construction, where he eventually retired.

Following his retirement from construction, Sam joined the Laurens County School System, where he worked for 17 years until his health began to fail. During that time, he developed close friendships with six coworkers who held a special place in his heart: Will Smith, Jimmy “Coach” Williams, Paul Conyers, Torrance Pittman, Woodrow Carswell, and O. J. Hall. He especially enjoyed talking junk, sharing laughs, and joking around with these gentlemen. The friendship they shared brought him much joy, and he often spoke fondly of their time together.

Sam was preceded in death by his beloved son, Sammy Wright; his parents, Leroy and Julia Wright; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Maxie Lee and Lucille Davis; his brothers, RoyLee Wright, Bennie Wright, and James Wright; his sister, Lucille Hicks; his brothers-in-law, Tony Davis, Willie Johnson, and Lee Hicks Sr.; and his sisters-in-law, Iler V. Wright, Bernice Wright, and Faye Wright.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 64 years, Retha Wright; his daughters, Lisa Wright and Carol (Jessie) Sailem, both of Dublin, Georgia; and his granddaughter, Catasha (Joseph) Harris of Snellville, Georgia, whom he lovingly raised as his own. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Sam is also survived by his brothers, William (Brenda) Wright of Lexington, Kentucky, and Jimmie (Betty) Wright of Locust Grove, Georgia; and his sisters, Julia Pearl (Charlie) Robinson and Jeanette Thomas, both of Wrightsville, Georgia. He leaves behind his sisters-in-law, Annie (Willie) Graddy, Berneda (Jerome) Darrisaw, Eula Mae Johnson, Barbara Davis, and Carolyn (Anthony) Brantley, all of Wrightsville, Georgia, and Wanda Davis of Dublin, Georgia.

He will also be fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends, and former coworkers. Sam will be remembered as a man who took pride in his work, valued his friendships, and devoted his life to the people he loved. Whether building, repairing, sharing a laugh with friends, or making memories with family, he left his mark in ways that will never be forgotten.

Though his hands can no longer do the work he loved, the lessons he taught, the stories he shared, and the love he gave will live on through the generations of family and friends who were blessed to know him. His life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and his legacy will live on for generations to come.

Public viewing will be held on Friday, October 30, 2026, from 11AM until 7PM at Serenity Funeral Home of Dublin.
